Bring back British industry and manufacturing

Britain can't compete with China for cheap labour. We need to tax imports and re-build our manufacturing base; increase training and apprenticeships and get the millions of 'economically inactive' Britons back to work

This is one of the best Petition 'ideas' on your site, with which I heartily agree because unless and until we re-kick start our manufacturing industry and bring back apprenticeships and skill training the country will never regain its prosperity. Britain needs hope and confidence for a bright future with young people receiving a high standard of education, knowledgeable in the three 'Rs' and practical skills and the encouragement of excellence.

I certainly agree. It will give the younger of us something to look forward to and keep them off the streets and away from drugs. Additionally it will make our country strong economically once more.

This is a great idea but a double edged sword in the open and global economy.
The simplistic view is good to get those who understand little about economics to start ranting, raving and getting wound up with racist motives.
For those with some grey matter, here is some perspective:
Say, We tax all imports from China, India etc.
Fact: The majority of English will not work for minimum wage and that is why there are thousands of eastern European and other immigrants doing jobs such as; picking in fields, factory work and restaurant work, cleaning etc...
So, that means, English will not work for 5.85 an hour and will demand 8,10, 12, 15 quid per hour making manufacturing in the UK very expensive.
So, we want to mnake this a great mass manufacturing hub and seel to the bog world. Now the catch, who is going to buy this?
The British market is 62 million people of which 18% is under 14 years of age and 16% is over 65 years.
So, out of the 41 million remaining, approx 3 million out of work. Assuming that each of these people support an average family of 3 that affects 9 million people.
Now we are left with a market of approx 32 million. Of this there will be a % that lives below the poverty level and are just managing to get by let alone by expensive , quality, British products. They are looking for cheap and cheerful products.
Now, that we produce these in the UK and have increased the taxes of imports, the Chinese and Indians with a middle class of nearly 350 million each and growing will do the same which, in an instant makes British product un competitive in the open market.
If we ban imports they will ban our exports reaching their markets. So, in a nutshell, the UK doesn’t have the market power to play games with giants such as China, India, Brazil etc. Britain will lose and because those of you on this site will be the first to complain about price increase, low wages, long hours etc.
Britians manufacturing future is in niche, high tech stuff. We have a good talent base but this is not for the masses or dropout students who can’t even make it to GCSE level, and there are plenty of them around.
Incase you don’t know, an Indian owned company is the largest industrial employer in the UK giving British 50,000 jobs. Also, 88% of Britain is white British. Of the remainder 3% is Asian but contribute a whopping 10% of the countries GDP.
So, you don’t need to be a rocket scintist to figure out who is working harder here. I agree there are some scummy Asians who need to be locked up but the majority (90%) are hardworking, law abiding people who want to be part of Britain. This may not see like that in certain isolated pockets such as eastham etc but thankfully they are a small (in your face) percentage.
So, there is a complex response encompassing several issues.
